Chapter Eleven

Stephen woke to what sounded like the building falling down around him. The thunderous pounding ripped him from unconsciousness and sent him bolting upright in bed. Blinking blearily, he tried to clear his vision and make sense of his rude awakening. A low, rumbling growl to his right reminded Stephen that he hadn’t gone to bed alone the night before.

Maddox was already out of bed and moving around the room. After hours of lovemaking the night before, Stephen was surprised that the man was conscious, let alone alert and ready for attack. The dull throbbing ache in his own backside had Stephen questioning his own ability to walk anytime in the near future. Muscles tensed and countenance dark, Maddox was haphazardly jerking on clothes, his eyes never straying from the door.

“What’s going on, Madd?”

Maddox looked at Stephen, his harsh expression softening just a bit around the edges. “I wish I knew. Whatever it is, it can’t be good.”

Peeking at the clock, Stephen groaned. “Who the hell is it? It’s only six o’clock in the morning,” he grumbled. “Someone better be dead or dying. If not, they are going to wish they were.”

“It’s Forrest,” Maddox replied, “and I’m afraid you might not be far off. The scent of evil and decay is in the air. I believe your skills are going to be needed.”

Maddox’s somber expression sent a chill through Stephen’s body. Scurrying out of bed, Stephen ignored the aches and twinges of his overtaxed muscles. He crossed the room and quickly pulled on his own clothes in silence. Maddox waited until Stephen was fully covered before opening the door and ushering Forrest inside. The man sidled past Maddox, drawing in a quick breath as he eased into the room.

“Alpha. Alpha Mate.” Forrest nodded in deference. “I need you both to come downstairs with me. There’s been an incident involving the inn’s guests.”

“What’s happened?” Maddox asked. He moved to the edge of the bed, then sat and began lacing up his boots.

Forrest shifted on his feet, discomfort clear on his face. “I think it would be easier to show you, rather than try to explain.”

Maddox glowered at his beta. “Why don’t you let me be the judge of that, Forrest?”

“Madd,” Forrest murmured, “I really don’t think…”

“Enough!” Maddox barked. “No more tiptoeing around it. Just spit it out already. What’s the situation with the other guests? How many have been affected?”

Forrest paled and, for a moment, Stephen worried he might be sick. Whatever was going on was bad. As he stepped into his own boots and did up the laces, Stephen questioned whether he really wanted to know what was going on downstairs.

Forrest took a deep breath and cleared his throat. “It seems the necromancer paid the inn a late-night visit.”

Stephen’s stomach dropped so fast it made his head spin. Fighting back a wave of nausea, he tried to swallow past the lump that had formed in his throat. “What happened?” he croaked, his voice rough and crackly.

“He drained them, Alpha Mate,” Forrest answered solemnly.
